New Moon in Capricorn
Winter Solstice
December 21st, 2014
A Time for Mastery
It took me a lifetime.
― Pablo Picasso
The New Moon in Capricorn coincides with the Winter Solstice, and thus the longest night of the year; the darkest day. This is nature’s invitation for us to burrow into our deepest, darkest depths. Like a seed buried in the soil, our souls are in hibernation mode waiting for the return of Spring. The magical dark now beckons us and in return we feel enveloped and blanketed by the perfect black wholeness of the night.
Capricorn is the sign of mastery and this is cultivated only through consistency, commitment, patience, love, and rigorous discipline. Now is the time to asses devotion to your current paths: Where do you spend your time, energy, and resources? Is this in the area of your life where you wish to achieve the greatest level of mastery-- or are you squandering your time and talent on immediate gratification and distraction? Saturn is the ruler of this lunation and both Capricorn and Saturn remind us of of the significance of time, intention, and patience.
This particular Capricorn new Moon is especially powerful as it falls days before Saturn leaves Scorpio for the first time since October of 2012. We are preparing for major alchemy, literally going from water to fire as Saturn moves into the mutable fiery sign of Sagittarius just two days after this New Moon/Solstice. The call of this new Saturn Cycle incubates in our psyche as we seed our intentions for the months to come, making this a deeply liminal time and space where a new vision waits on the other side, even though we don’t quite have the clarity to grasp it yet. We are feeling our way through the dark. We sense the warmth of a fiery new cycle approaching; we sense its potential to burn through the previous stagnation, shadow, and darkness. We have the intuition that a wider and more joyful expanse is on the other side of this transition’s dark tunnel.
The question is: Do we have the faith to believe in that which has yet to appear? This New Moon is a resting place, a reset and a time to consider our relationship with mastery.
Simultaneously, the planet Uranus is changing directions and coming out of retrograde in the brother cardinal sign of Aries. This ongoing dialogue (read: battle) between Uranus and Pluto gets some renewed and unexpected “push-back” from Uranus in its renewed power and the “we’re not going to take it” energies triumph over the tyranny of power. Use this as a personal metaphor for how the battle is carrying on in your own psyche: Your inner instinctual, primal-screaming warrior will no longer lie down in silence.
The message of this Solstice/New Moon remains: Without total devotion to our unique path of individuation, one infused with love and free from the destructive forces of power, there is no mastery.
