Healing is a long, deep, circuitous path with its own timeline. The danger of "compare and despair" collective anxiety can take us outside of our own process. Trauma takes many shapes and reminds us of what is missing in our lives instead of what we have and how to value it. Perhaps we haven't achieved all we wanted, or believe we are not living up to our true potential. What are the means we use to hide our feelings of inadequacy? Enter the inner demons of doubt, guilt, regret and shame to destroy our creativity, consistency and momentum. But it doesn't have to be this way. By embracing and embodying the shadow, we reclaim our authentic voice, creativity, power, and presence. 

 

Envy—- the emotion supposedly no one has but clearly rules the world. We are steeped in a collective unconscious breeding on competition and popularity contests oblivious to the devastating impact this has on our creativity, authenticity and life force. By calling this out and making the shadow conscious, we can reclaim lost desires, and powers we’ve unwittingly let slip away through projected aspects of ourselves. .
Perhaps we are the ones being envied and don't even realize the harmful and hateful energies undermining us on subtle but potent levels. Envy is everywhere. There is no denying its presence. Social media is a constant display of "living your best life" to create illusions that do their best to mire our souls in the muck of FOMO. Fears create holes within the psyche, cast walls and make us feel we aren't good enough, haven't achieved as much and deathly comparisons kick in. If we are on the receiving end of envy or jealousy, we might feel the need to dim our own light and power.  Attending to the deep roots of the wounds of inadequacy and fear allows us to take steps, however small and steady, to source our inner power, tap into our vast emotional resources and divine tools to help us achieve our goals and dreams. By committing to the inner work, we are able to take those insecurities, transform and transmute pain, envy and stagnation and move forward without guilt or shame lagging behind us like a heavy shadow. It is probably the most repressed, denied and yet in truth most pervasive human emotion running behind the scenes of so much of our personal and collective culture. How do we understand this shadow in ourselves and others so that we may take back our power instead of allowing this energy to run us and control us in ways we aren't even aware of? How much energy is lost in this shadowy realm that often starts in childhood with our siblings and adolescence with our social groups? Sherene Schostak, M.A. is a Jungian Analyst and astrologer in private practice for the past eighteen years in New York City, San Francisco and India. She's the resident astrologer of Elle UK, LOFT and The Assembly. She specializes in depression, anxiety, creative blocks, life transitions, eating disorders, and relationships.

She is the author of several books including: Speculation Now; Transpersonal Astrology: Explorations at the Frontier; & Surviving Saturn’s Return (McGrawHill). She holds a Master’s Degree from New York University in Clinical Psychology, a Masters in Developmental Psychology from Pace University and advanced graduate work in psychoanalytic studies from The New School and The Jungian Institute, ISAP, Zurich. She is currently based in San Francisco but teaches workshops internationally on metaphysics, authentic movement, tarot, astrology and dreamwork. 

Katelan Foisy is a multimedia artist, occultist, and writer. Her fine art pieces have been displayed at The Worcester Art Museum, Ohio History Museum, MODA, WEAM, A&D Gallery, and Last Rights. She has graced the pages of the Grammy Award programs and the stage of Cynthia von Buhler's immersive historical plays "Speakeasy Dollhouse" and "The Brothers Booth." Katelan has been featured in NY Times, Elle magazine, Paper Magazine, GQ Italy, Time Out NY, Witches & Pagans, and many others—for her work as an artist,curator and occultist. She has written for Motherboard/VICE, Electric Literature, Luna Luna, ERIS magazine,COILHOUSE and held events with Atlas Obscura and lectured at Morbid Anatomy. Her short films have been shown at Cinamatique Francaise as part of the Romani Avante Garde Film Sessions and illustrations are featured on The Smashing Pumpkins "Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour" as well as William Patrick Corgan's "Ogilala" tour. She is the artist for  the  Sibyls Oraculum with Tayannah McQuillar and the forthcoming Hoodoo Tarot . Chaos of the Third Mind with Vanessa Sinclair  will be released in 2020 from Fulgar Ltd, UK. She was called a “Female Jack Kerouac” by Taylor Mead, a “Modern Day Francesca Woodman” by Cynthia von Buhler, and William Patrick Corgan has said, "They used to burn witches like Katelan." 

Katelan comes from a long line of herbalists, mystics, and healers. She currently has over 20 years experience reading tarot .  She studies Afro-Cuban traditions under her Godfather Ochani Lele and is a confirmed child of Eleggua.  She lives in Chicago in an old hotel by the lake. www.katelanfoisy.com
